Living generously: the LIFE Available model

Generosity can be hard—especially when we feel as though we don’t have enough. Here’s why it’s vital we get over that impulse.

Generosity is the quality of being generous, encompassing a spirit of giving, kindness and openhandedness. It extends beyond giving money and includes a willingness to give of oneself, whether through acts of kindness, compassion or support for others. Generosity is often associated with a noble or magnanimous spirit, reflecting an abundance of goodwill and a willingness to go above and beyond what is expected.

Generosity is demonstrated in many forms, including giving time, resources or support to benefit others. It is not solely limited to material possessions. The act of generosity is rooted in a genuine desire to make a positive impact, whether on an individual level or within a broader community. It is a quality that enriches both the giver and the recipient, fostering a sense of interconnectedness and goodwill within society.

While generosity is a virtue that can enrich our lives, many encounter barriers that limit their ability to live generous lives. Understanding these barriers is crucial in addressing the reluctance to embrace the principles of what I call the LIFE Available model.

what gets in the way

Personal insecurities, fear of scarcity and societal pressures can all hinder us from living generously. The fear of being taken advantage of or exploited can discourage acts of generosity, as doing so may make us feel vulnerable. A scarcity mindset, driven by the fear of not having enough, can create a barrier to generosity, leading us to prioritise our own needs over charitable acts.

Personal challenges, such as stress, time constraints and feelings of inadequacy can impede us from living generously. These challenges create mental barriers to generosity, influencing our mindset and willingness to give. Fear and lessons we learned in our upbringing can also contribute to these barriers, shaping our beliefs, values and attachments to possessions, which can impact our ability to cultivate a mindset of generosity and empathy. Time constraints resulting from demanding jobs or familial responsibilities can also pose challenges when it comes to practising generosity with our time.

Financial limitations can also present a barrier to living generously. We may feel constrained by our financial circumstances, believing that we lack the resources to make a meaningful impact. Overcoming this barrier involves reframing the concept of generosity beyond the monetary.

Understanding and addressing these barriers is essential in empowering us to overcome our reluctance to live generously. By acknowledging and navigating these challenges, we can begin to embrace the principles of the LIFE Available generosity model, ultimately making a positive impact on our lives and the lives of those around us.

understanding the LIFE acrostic

The LIFE Available model offers a comprehensive and practical framework for individuals to embrace a generous and impactful life. There are two parts to the model. The first part is an acrostic based on the word LIFE. L stands for labour, I for influence, F for finances and E for expertise. Labour, influence, finances and expertise are aspects of our life we all possess in varying degrees. The second part of the model is availability. By delving deeper into the core elements of the model, we can gain a richer understanding of how to apply its principles in our daily lives.

labour (L)

Contributing one’s time, effort and skills to benefit others is a cornerstone of living generously. This can take various forms, from volunteering at local community organisations to helping a neighbour with things around their home or lending a supportive ear to a friend in need. By investing our time and energy in acts of service, we not only contribute to the wellbeing of others, but also foster a sense of community and interconnectedness. Whether it’s participating in community clean-up initiatives, assisting at a local shelter or engaging in mentorship programs, the act of labouring for the betterment of others embodies the essence of generosity and compassion.

influence (I)

Our influence, whether through our words, actions or advocacy, holds significant power to affect positive change. By leveraging our influence, we can raise awareness about important social issues, inspire others to get involved in charitable causes or serve as role models for positive behaviour. Through sharing stories and experiences that demonstrate the impact of using our influence for the betterment of society, the LIFE Available framework underscores the profound potential of individual influence in shaping a more compassionate and giving world.

finances (F)

Financial generosity stands as a critical pillar in making a tangible impact on the lives of others. Whether through charitable giving, supporting causes aligned with our personal values or extending financial assistance to those in need, the careful allocation of our financial resources can bring about meaningful change. Practical advice and actionable steps within the LIFE Available model can include creating a structured budget for charitable contributions, exploring avenues for impactful philanthropy or engaging in ethical investment practices that align with one’s values. By embracing financial generosity, individuals can play a vital role in uplifting and supporting others, thereby fostering a culture of generosity and compassion.

expertise (E)

Sharing our knowledge, skills and professional expertise represents a form of generosity that goes beyond material offerings. Whether it involves mentoring individuals in need, offering educational support or providing pro bono professional services, the act of sharing our expertise contributes to the growth and empowerment of others. Through this aspect of the LIFE Available model, individuals are encouraged to recognise the profound impact of offering our expertise as a means of fostering personal and professional development within their communities. By leveraging our unique skills and knowledge, we can significantly contribute to improving our society and the lives of those we come in contact with.

be available

While we all have LIFE—labour, influence, finances and expertise—in varying degrees, we often fail to use these elements to help others. That’s why the second part of LIFE Available is so important. I believe we are blessed with labour, influence, finances and expertise so that we can bless, or help, others.

To embrace the life of generosity, we must adopt the concept of being “available”, which entails wholeheartedly sharing one’s labour, influence, finances and expertise when opportunities arise to positively impact others’ lives.

The principle of being available begins with an acknowledgement that the resources, time, influence, finances and expertise we possess are gifts to be used for the benefit of others. Rather than hoarding these blessings for personal gain, the focus is on managing them in ways that align with our personal spirit of generosity and service. This involves a mindset of openness, being attentive to the needs of others and seeking opportunities to make a positive difference.

Embracing the concept of being available requires a readiness to step out of your comfort zone, to be adaptable, and to respond to the needs and opportunities that present themselves. It’s about being mindful of the impact you can have and being open to using your resources effectively to benefit others.

By understanding and consistently embracing the principles of the LIFE Available generosity framework, we can all cultivate a spirit of generosity that extends beyond traditional notions of giving, encompassing labour, influence, finances and expertise as vehicles for positive change and meaningful impact.
